Seraphim: plural of “seraph”; a type of celestial or heavenly being (commonly referred to as “angels”). Tradition places seraphim in the highest rank in Christian Angelology.

Complex: a core pattern of emotions, memories, perceptions & wishes in the personal unconscious organized around a common theme.

Seraphim Complex can then be translated to having a fixation or a connection that is so strong to these celestial or religious figures that it produces a patterning of our mind.

For Seraphim Complex the notion of angels & our fixation is not completely a religious one as much as it is the early anime industries tendency to aestheticize Western religion.

Anime’s such as Angel Beats, Trinity Blood, Hellsing etc. only furthered our interest in gothic aesthetics in adolescence, but it also personally represented a Golden Era of storytelling within the industry. During this time simple props commonly associated with angels were abundant within anime & manga i.e., wings & halos.

Seraphim Complex is a private ode to a nostalgic past that has influenced our present selves.
